Bree Newsome: ‘Words are never as powerful as action’

Europe Editor and Presenter

Joining us from New York is Casey Michel a journalist who covers the far-right and from Charlotte in North Carolina is the artist and civil rights activist – Bree Newsome – who, in 2015, climbed the flagpole in front of the South Carolina Capitol building and lowered the confederate battle flag.

The flag was originally raised in 1961 as a statement of opposition to the Civil Rights Movement at the time. The massacre of nine black parishioners 2 years ago by a white supremacist in Charleston reignited controversy over South Carolina’s flag.
