In Afghanistan, the Taliban have claimed that the bomb attacks on 13 March that killed 35 people in Kandahar were a warning to NATO’s top general, who is planning a major offensive in the area.

A fifth device exploded in the city on Sunday 14 March. Kandahar province is a Taliban stronghold, and militants are said to operate around the city itself with little restraint.
