Big rise in council house sell-offs

The number of council houses which have been sold into private hands has shot up five fold over the last six years, according to new figures, thanks to £3.5bn in public money to help tenants buy their homes at a discount.

Councils warned that the government’s right to buy scheme has become unsustainable, without more powers to build new homes, while Labour has called for the policy to be scrapped.
