Betty Campbell: Statue of Wales’ first Black headteacher unveiled

Home Affairs Correspondent

Told as a child that her ambition to become a teacher would face “insurmountable” obstacles, Betty Campbell defied the odds.

She went on to be not only the first Black head teacher in Wales, but an inspirational campaigner who put her community in Cardiff’s docklands firmly on the map.

And today there was another first. The statue of her that was unveiled in the city centre is thought to be the first statue of a Welsh woman in the whole of Wales.
