Bercow to stand down as Commons Speaker

Just when you thought there could be no more political surprises today, there was one unexpected announcement by John Bercow, who said he’d be standing down by the end of the month.

Mr Bercow said he’d tried to be “the backbenchers’ backstop”, and although there were tributes from both sides of the House, his controversial rulings on Brexit issues hasn’t won him many fans on the government benches.
