Aung San Suu Kyi: Court sentences ousted leader, as UN criticises ‘sham’ trial

The ousted leader of Myanmar, Aung San Suu Kyi, has been found guilty of incitement and breaching Covid rules in the first of a series of court cases against her.

She was initially sentenced to four years in jail, but that was swiftly reduced to two years.

The UN’s head of human rights described the trial as a sham, while Amnesty said the charges were “bogus” and an attempt by the country’s military rulers to crush any signs of opposition.
