At least 22 people have been killed and more than a thousand injured, after a powerful earthquake struck eastern Turkey yesterday evening.

The 6.8 magnitude quake occurred just before 9pm local time and was centred on the town of Sivrice in Elazig province – around 350 miles east of the capital, Ankara.

It caused buildings to collapse and sent residents rushing into the streets.
