Somali pirates hijack Greek ship

Updated on 02 May 2009

Somali pirates have hijacked a Greek-owned cargo ship in the Indian Ocean.

The ship, with a Ukrainian crew, was seized near the Seychelles island chain.

An agent for ship-owner Seven Seas Maritime said he believed 24 Ukrainians were on board when the ship was seized.

He said: "We can confirm the ship has been hijacked, we don't know a lot more than that at present."

It is believed the ship is carrying 35,000 tons of soya.

Nato spokesman Lieutenant Commander Alexandre Santos Fernandes said the Maltese-flagged Ariana was hijacked north-west of the Seychelles islands about 1,000 miles from Nato's operating area.

Mr Fernandes said the Ariana was taken in a rare overnight attack.
