Caroline Lucas elected first Green MP
Updated on 07 May 2010
Caroline Lucas wins the Brighton Pavilion constituency for the Greens, the first time the party has had a candidate elected to the House of Commons.
The South East MEP since 1999 is the leader of the Party.
Speaking after the result was announced she said: "Today the people of Brighton Pavilion have made history by electing Britain's first Green MP to Westminster.
"Thank you so much for putting the politics of hope above the politics of fear and I pledge that I will do my very best to do you proud.
"For once the word historic fits the bill."
Ms Lucas had been predicted to win the seat, which has been held by Labour since 1997. It was a Conservative stronghold before that. She polled 16,238 votes, while Labour trailed in second with 14,986 votes.
A record number of Green candidates stood this year, with candidates in more than 300 constituencies.
