After nearly a week of revelations which have shocked and outraged voters, the prime minister stated that MPs must prove themselves worthy of the public's trust.

And so one Labour MP has announced he is returning nearly £42,000 claimed on furniture and fittings for his second home. Another will repay £22,000 claimed to treat dry rot.

And former Liberal Democrat leader Sir Menzies Campbell is paying back nearly £1,500 he claimed for work done by an interior designer on his London flat.

Conservative MP Ann Widdecombe said: "The parties all want to come up with their own solutions and it is becoming a competition of my shirt is hairier than yours."
