A dejected-looking England team - plus assorted WAGs, including Christine Bleakley - return home to Heathrow airport, two days after their elimination from the World Cup in South Africa.

England return home to Heathrow airport after their elimination from the World Cup in South Africa

David Beckham led the team off the plane, with Jamie Carragher and Michael Carrick just behind him. Players' wives, girlfriends and family followed them onto the tarmac.

England midfielder Frank Lampard and his girlfriend, TV presenter Christine Bleakley, are seen leaving the plane one after the other.

Ms Bleakley recently announced that she would be joining GMTV, where she will team up with former One Show presenter Adrian Chiles, who is fronting ITV's World Cup coverage from South Africa.

Goalkeeper Robert Green, whose mistake in the first match against the USA set the tone for the national team's campaign, cut a solitary figure as he descended the steps from the plane.

The players were all whisked through a VIP suite at Heathrow without having to pass through a terminal – or face the waiting press.

Yesterday the England manager, Fabio Capello, announced that he wanted to remain in charge, despite the team's poor World Cup performances.

But he will have to wait two weeks to learn his fate, when he meets Club England Chairman Sir Dave Richards.
