Sri Lanka declares end to combat

The UN says more than 50,000 people are in "mortal danger" inside the Sri Lankan war zone. Nick Paton Walsh reports.

Combat operations are over, Sri Lanka has declared, promising to stop using heavy weapons against Tamil Tiger rebels, and start rescuing civilians trapped by the fighting instead.

Along with UN officials, Britain's international development minister, Mike Foster, has flown to Sri Lanka to assess the humanitarian situation.
