Slideshow: Alex in Afghanistan

By Alex Thomson

Updated on 24 February 2008

When not out on patrol with British troops in Helmand, Alex Thomson sampled a "loo with a view" and met a man who runs a power station on his own.

Channel 4 News's chief correspondent Alex Thomson spent several weeks in Afghanistan in January and February of this year. Based at Camp Bastion, near Lashka Gar, he accompanied UK troops on patrol and into battle against the Taliban.

He also had the chance to meet up with friends such as Mahmood, the self-styled "journalist, cinema and theater actor and producer of ITN London", and local legends like Rassoud, who single-handedly maintains the Kajaki dam power station.
