More UK troops to Afghanistan

By James Blake

Updated on 16 June 2008

Gordon Brown agrees with President Bush, in the UK on a two-day visit, to send more British troops to Afghanistan.

In a joint news conference in Downing Street in the last hour, the two men praised each other's "resolution" and "toughness" in tackling terrorism and in their handling of international affairs.

The prime minister said the British military presence in Afghanistan would be pushed to its "highest level" to keep up pressure on the Taliban.

But he said there was "still work to be done" in Iraq and pledged there would be "no artificial timetable" for the withdrawal of troops from there.
