Tory 'toffs' triumphant in Crewe

By Samira Ahmed

Updated on 23 May 2008

The Conservatives' first by-election win in 26 years overturns a Labour majority of 7,000 with a swing of 17 per cent.

Gordon Brown believes the result in Crewe and Nantwich reflects voters' worries about the economy, but David Cameron called it "the end of New Labour".

The result was disastrous for the prime minister, putting further pressure on his leadership, but his deputy said by-elections weren't a good predictor of success in general elections.

The Tories won more than twenty thousand votes, or almost 8,000 more than Labour.
