Updated on 01 October 2008

David Cameron is to hit back at Gordon Brown's jibe that "this is no time for a novice" in his party conference speech today.

Cameron is expected to say that character and judgement are more important than experience.

In a conference session this morning the Conservatives said they were ready for government and had the right economic policy.

In the wake of recent financial turmoil Cameron is believed to have completely re-written his keynote speech, due this afternoon at the Tory party conference in Birmingham.
