Darling backs down on tax changes

By Lindsay Taylor

Updated on 23 April 2008

In a major concession to rebels, Alistair Darling confirms he's looking at changes, backdated to the start of the financial year, to compensate those losing out from the abolition of the 10p tax rate.

He has written to the chair of the treasury select committee about increasing the winter fuel payment system, tax credits and the minimum wage to ensure the 5.3m people affected won't be disadvantaged by the income tax changes.

Frank Field, the chief Labour rebel, has now taken his name off the amendment, which had threatened to defeat the government.
