500 more British troops to Afghanistan
Updated on 14 October 2009
Five hundred extra British troops will go to Afghanistan - provided that they have the right equipment, that Nato also sends reinforcements, and that more Afghan soldiers are trained.
The announcement followed a sombre moment in the Common as Gordon Brown read out a grim list of all 37 service personnel killed in action since MPs last met in July.
Mr Brown said the troop increase was a response to "clear advice" from commanders on the ground.
But has he given the military what they really wanted?
