School holidays cost parents £5.6bn

Parents will part with £5.6 billion on family activities during the school summer holidays, according to a survey.

The expenditure amounts to £330 per family, said Moneysupermarket Vouchers, which conducted the poll.

As many as 64% of the 3,000 parents surveyed said they were worried about how much the school holidays were likely to cost.

More than one in five claimed it would be a struggle to pay for the activities, with 27% planning to give up nights out with friends to cope with the cost of the holidays.

According to the survey, 12% plan to save money by not going abroad, with 53% likely to visit theme parks - the most popular day-trip activity.

Also, 45% will go to a swimming pool and 31% plan to go bowling.

Sian Harrison, of, said: "The long summer holiday can be a real stretch on family finances. However, our research shows parents are determined not to let the kids go without."
