Trafalgar's plinth charming

By Nicholas Glass

Updated on 08 January 2008

The shortlisted proposals for sculptures to occupy Trafalgar Square's fourth plinth go on show at London's National Gallery.

What do a family of meerkats, a ship in a bottle, a burnt-out car, and a solar-powered peace sign have in common?

They are all proposals for works of art to occupy the fourth plinth in Trafalgar Square.

Six model sculptures went on show today at the National Gallery in London, vying to be the next choice for the plinth in 2009.

In March a committee meets to decide which work of art seems most appropriate. As in the past, the choice may prove controversial.
