Angela Merkel to step down as German Chancellor in 2021

The German Chancellor Angela Merkel is stepping down as leader of her Christian Democrat party, saying she took ultimate responsibility for her fourth term government’s poor showing in recent elections.

She’ll stay as Chancellor just until the end of the parliamentary term in 2021. She announced her complete withdrawal from politics after that date, declaring it was “time to start a new chapter”.
