The search is on to find the owners of “Anfield cat” after the grey and white tabby appeared on pitch during Monday night’s Premier League match at Liverpool’s famous ground.

Within minutes of the cat’s Anfield debut, it became an internet sensation with at least two spoof Twitter accounts popping up.

@AnfieldCat, which claims to be the “official twitter of me, the Anfield Cat”, has attracted more than 20,000 followers.

The real feline star sauntered on to the pitch around 11 minutes into last night’s game causing amusement for players and supporters. It enjoyed a sprint around the ground before being scooped up by a steward. However, the cat’s owner has not yet been identified.

Liverpool FC said the feline bore an uncanny resemblance to Moglet, an abandoned cat who shot to fame as the club’s unofficial mascot in the 1980s. Moglet was adopted by the club’s ground staff after being left outside the Anfield gates.

He was considered a lucky omen by the players and staff at Anfield. Monday’s match ended in a 0-0 draw.

A spokesman for the club said: “With King Kenny’s men back at Wembley in the Carling Cup final this year, is this new cat a long-lost relative of Moglet?”
