Channel 4 / Screen Scotland

Channel 4 is working with Screen Scotland on a jointly funded strategic initiative.

We are looking to Scotland for ideas at 9pm. The ideas can be rooted in documentary or specialist factual but should all aim to break new territory and have potential to become returners. We are interested in proposals based around the family, community, work, holiday, business, the high street and education. These may come with access or they could be a format but ideally they would be anchored in the real world (as opposed to a hugely constructed precinct which is more Fact Ent). Story, character and contemporaneousness are key and an entertaining/humorous approach should always follow. We are well-served for blue-light territories for now so would only consider truly exceptional access in this area. When it comes to specialist factual, we are particularly interested in hearing ideas around popular science and history.

For this process to work as efficiently as possible for all concerned, in the first instance, please send single-page ideas to by 9pm 9th November 2020.

Please put C4/Screen Scotland 9pm in the subject line.

We are limiting this to two ideas per production company.

Three ideas will be selected for further funded development leading to a two part commission for Channel 4 @ 9pm – both development and production stages will be match funded 50/50 by Channel 4 and Screen Scotland (final say and editorial control remain with Channel 4).

Please note that unfortunately due to the high number of expected submissions we won’t be able to offer feedback on unsuccessful submissions.

We will only contact you if your idea is being taken on to funded development.

This initiative is being championed by Factual Commissioning Editors Harjeet Chhokar & Will Rowson. They, along with Danny Horan, Channel 4’s Head Docs, conducted a virtual briefing Q&A session on Wednesday 28th October, which was chaired by Jo Street. A recording of the briefing can be viewed below.
