The Microsoft Edge browser returns a DRM error when you try to watch protected content and are using certain monitors or cables, such as VGA. This is because the media extension within Edge views the connection as unsafe, meaning protected content could be decrypted. There are a number of ways to continue watching content on All4 while using one of these connections:
- Change to another one of our supported HTML5 browsers (Chrome, Firefox, Safari)
- Switch to watching content in the Flash player
Or you can use a different connection, such as HDMI, to view content on another monitor.

No. All 4 programming is only available in the UK, Republic of Ireland, Jersey, Guernsey and Isle of Man. (Note: there are parts of Dorset and Kent where, in some weather conditions, you get a stronger mobile data signal from France than the UK, even if you have a UK SIM. This may cause All 4 to think you are abroad.)
Nor can you watch All 4 content via a UK SIM while overseas. Rights agreements mean that our All 4 service is only available in the UK and the Republic of Ireland, (although not for all programmes in ROI).
However, you can download programmes to watch whilst overseas on iOS and Android devices.

Commercially released Channel 4 titles can be purchased via DVD retailers. For videos/DVDs of our Learning/Education programmes click here.
If the video or DVD you want is not available through the Channel 4 store or another retailer, then the programme has not been released either by Channel 4 or any other distributor and is therefore not available for purchase. As we are sure you can appreciate, we receive hundreds of calls and e-mails requesting copies of programmes, therefore, Channel 4’s policy is that we do not provide one-off copies. However, you might be able to watch the programme again on line via our on demand Service, All 4 – click here.

To adjust the volume of video in the All4.com Player, click and drag the volume indicator in the control panel below the main image. If you are unable to increase the volume to an adequate level, check the Main volume and Wave volume of your computer system, which will override the volume level of the channel4.com player. You can usually access your system volume by clicking on the speaker icon in the lower right-hand corner of the Windows Task Bar.
Ensure you have mute unchecked and all external speakers connected properly.Speaker settings: To view your PC's speaker setting go to your PC's Control Panel and open the Sounds and Audio Devices control. In the Sound and Audio Devices Properties dialog, go to the Volume tab and in the Speaker settings section click the Advanced button. In the Advanced Audio Properties dialog, go to the Speakers tab and verify that your Speaker set-up is configured to match your PC's speaker configuration. If you have a six speaker 5.1 stereo system, select 5.1 surround sound speakers from the Speaker set-up drop down. Alternatively, if your PC has stereo speakers or you are using a laptop, select the appropriate stereo setting from the Speaker set-up drop down.
If your Speaker set-up is set to a mono setting, you should change the setting to an appropriate stereo setting (as some videos encoded with 5.1 surround sound experience low centre channel sound if your PC's Speaker set-up is set to a mono setting). In most cases turning up the volume control and adjusting the speaker settings will allow sound to play properly.
Please consult your computer manual/help for additional troubleshooting regarding sound settings specific to your computer.

If you want to change the size of what you see in Windows, you have two options. You can change the size of what is on screen or change the resolution. Changing the size is usually the best option.Open Start , select Settings > System > Display.
Under Scale and layout, check the setting under Change the size of text, apps, and other items. We suggest you use the percentage marked "(Recommended)."
If that doesn't solve your problem, under Resolution, select a new value. We suggest you stick with the resolution marked "(Recommended)."
Note: If your resolution was fine and recently changed (things appear huge, for example), your graphics driver might need to be updated. Run Windows Update to get the latest driver. If it's just the size of things in your web browser windows that changed, try pressing the Ctrl+0 (zero) keys to return the zoom level to 100%.
Changing the size of the All 4 Player screen:
You can watch programmes in small, medium or full-screen view by clicking on the icons in the bottom right hand corner of the All 4 player. This will give options for the 'Pop out player' as well as 'Full screen'.

If you can download the app you can use the download function. However, not all programmes are available for download but those that are will be clearly marked with the download symbol
-
If you can't find the programme you're looking for it could be due to a number of different reasons. It may be the case that the programme is no longer on the service (programmes that have been selected for Catch-up are only available for 30 days after broadcast). Alternatively, Channel 4 may not own the rights to show this programme on All 4. Finally, it could be that the programme has not been selected to be made available on the All 4 service.
If there is a programme you particularly want to see on All 4, let us know and we can check if it will be coming in the future or we can pass on your suggestion that it should! -

Channel 4 originated transmissions provide for three aspect ratios: 4:3, 16:9 that is safe for 14:9 viewing and 16:9. Using a 4:3 TV to view a 4:3 aspect ratio transmission is straight forward. When a 4:3 TV is used to view 16:9 safe for 14:9, what should happen is that the freeview box will zoom in a little to provide thin black bands top and bottom and cut a little of the sides of the picture off. This facility is intended to provide a reasonable compromise for viewers with 4:3 TVs. (14:9 is often used for analogue transmissions for the same reason).Note that some freeview boxes do not support this option and will produce a 16:9 letterbox display in this mode with thick black lines top and bottom, but the correct aspect ratio.A few types of box may become confused and not produce satisfactory pictures. When a 4:3 TV is used to view 16:9 programmes the pictures may be presented in one of two ways depending on the chosen option in the freeview box. Either in letterbox with thick black lines top and bottom or in centre cut out. Centre cut out enlarges the centre of the 16:9 image to fill the 4:3 screen and in so doing cuts off the sides of the picture. Note that some shows which are a mixture of 16:9 and 4:3 have to present the 4:3 with an area of black each side of the screen. If this is being watched in letterbox on a 4:3 TV, this will result in an area of black all around the image. E4 is transmitted with a different resolution setting from E4+1.Some boxes can give unexpected results as a result of this. If you are able to compare results/settings with friends and neighbours it may be helpful.

All 4 is a free-to-view video on demand service but we do require users register their details to watch. Registration is free and gives access to all of Channel 4's latest shows and unlocks access to an extensive archive of classic programmes and downloads to watch offline. All 4 is designed to help us deliver programmes that our viewers will like and want to watch. We aim to personalise the experience so it's unique for our users and need viewer details to do this. It helps us get to know you better and deliver more targeted advertising which is how we fund our programming.
All 4's content is free to watch because we are a 100% advertiser-funded broadcaster. As a government-owned, not-for-profit organisation, the revenue we make from advertising doesn't go to shareholders – it goes back into making more programmes.
Knowing more about our viewers also means we can restrict age related content to the right audience and ensure children and young people are unable to access inappropriate content on the service.
Our Privacyand Cookiespolicies provide all the information you need to understand how, where and why we use your data. But you are in control and can update your preferences at any time, including by opting out of targeted advertising, personalisation and data pairing. To do this, sign in to your account at www.channel4.com – select My 4 – Account Settings. It's up to you whether you want to receive emails from us, but even if you haven't opted in to receive emails, we may still need to send you service messages, which will contain important information about our services, such as changes to our policies.

Please find out which version of the Flash Player you currently have installed. Go to this page http://www.adobe.com/software/flash/about/ (Opens in new window) in your usual web browser. There should be a small box about half way down the right hand side of the page headed 'Version Information'. This is your current Flash version. Please note down the details.
Then upgrade to or reinstall the latest version as it is possible your Flash Player may be corrupt. To do this, click on the following link to go to the Flash Player Download Center: Get Adobe. This should take you to a page with a button 'Agree and Install', click and follow any further instructions from Adobe. This should install the latest version of Flash.
You can re-check that you have the latest version installed by repeating the step above if required.
Also, some ad-blocking software can prevent play buttons from appearing and the player may also appear to hang. We would suggest that you either disable the ad-blocking software or add channel4.com to your whitelist of sites.
We currently know of two freeware 'shields' available on both Mac and PC that cause problems:
- Peer Guardian (this uses a blocklist of IPs/web addresses - unfortunately these lists vary and legitimate IPs have found their way on)
- Hotspot Shield (this hides your IP amongst other things, which would cause a problem)
-
The site can be navigated using switches for individuals with who may have limited dexterity or a mobility impairment. Switch Control lets you control your Android Phone/tablet or iOS mobile/tablet using a single switch or multiple switches, which will allow various commands to be undertaken including scanning multiple selectable items on a web page or app, with the ability to select a particular element that is clickable. For more information on switch capability please go to the following links on the Apple or Google websites: iOS Switch Control or view Switch Access for Android

The All 4 iOS app has also been developed so that iconography/buttons are of sufficient size to select.

When casting content, the video playing on your HDTV is not the downloaded file – for Google Chromecast, the video must be streamed and as our restrictions do not allow streaming All 4 content abroad, the video will be unable to cast (although you are still able to view downloads on your device). Rights agreements mean that our All 4 service is only available in the UK. Even if you are a citizen of the UK you cannot access the service from abroad. Some of our programmes are available in the Republic of Ireland, subject to rights. As Google Chromecast is a streaming service which we require specific rights for it will not be possible to watch any All 4 downloaded content using Google Chromecast.
-
Yes, you can stream on both Wi-Fi and mobile data
-
If you mouse-over the player you’ll find a social sharing button in the bottom right hand corner of the window. Clicking this button will bring up the option to share on Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr and Google+. You’ll need to log-in to your social network if you aren’t already.

All 4+ allows you to watch all the shows on All 4 without ads for a monthly fee. Due to some rights restriction there will be some programmes that feature sponsorship messages and/or promotional trails for other Channel 4 programmes.
-
Due to recent technical changes, it is no longer possible to maintain an All 4 app for the service.
All 4 will continue to be available on Xbox One. -
Channel 4 must acquire specific rights to provide programmes on All 4 that aren't always covered by existing television rights. Therefore it can't be guaranteed that all programmes will be available to view.
-
The All 4 player on channel4.com is voice activation accessible and works best with Dragon 13 or greater. It is recommended to use it with IE11 or greater as the web browser (please see recommended requirements of your software vendor for which compatible versions of browser can be used).
As well as controls to operate the video, the player may also contain 1 or more screens such as age confirmation or login to view restricted content. Please follow the provided details and instructions to complete these steps. Navigating Screens and Using Controls
Once you have the video in focus using the skip to content link (visible on tab focus), use keyboard keystroke commands to navigate and activate the video controls:
- 'Press TAB' – cycles forward through screen options and control buttons
- 'Press SHIFT + TAB' - cycles backward through screen options and control buttons
- 'Press SPACEBAR' or 'Press ENTER' – activates controls / buttons / links
Voice Activation Control in Fullscreen
Due to security restrictions of the Adobe Flash Player, keyboard control is disabled in fullscreen; this means voice activation control is also affected. You can watch programmes in fullscreen using voice activation software but to use keyboard control commands you must exit fullscreen. To exit fullscreen use the "press escape key" keystroke command.
The Popout player may be used as an alternative to fullscreen. Selecting the “large size” button will scale the player window to its maximum available size. This view, unlike fullscreen, is fully keyboard accessible and therefore can also be used via voice activation keystroke commands.
-
If you are watching a downloaded episode on your Android device and you initiate a cast session, then it will be the streamed version of the episode which will play out on the Google Cast device. Casting a downloaded episode will be subject to the streamed version having the appropriate rights for play back on Goggle Chromecast.
-
Not necessarily, but usually. As well as an HDTV, it needs to have an HD decoder built-in, (or an external set top box) that can receive the HD signals and a TV service offering high-definition programmes, many of which are free. There was a confusing period in the late 2000’s where many TV’s said they were “HD Ready” but you need to check that they can decode an HD broadcast. If they can’t you may need an extra set-top-box.
-
Yes, as long as the programme is still available on All 4, you can download it as many times as you like.

Audio description on Freeview makes use of two audios. The first is the normal stereo programme sound that all viewers use. The second audio carries only mono audio description which has mix control data associated with it. It is likely you are receiving the audio description service. A Netgem Freeview box makes use of the above to produce a fully mixed stereo audio which incorporates the audio description for blind viewers. As a result of recent feedback from viewers, it has become apparent that there are some Freeview receivers that are able to select the second audio channel as a multi-language option. Note that although obviously in English, this second audio is not suitable for use by itself as it provides only audio description and should be deselected thereby negating the problem. If the above does not help, you will need to contact whoever supplies your signal and they should be able to help.

All 4 uses geo-blocking software to detect where your computer is located when it connects to the internet. Occasionally you may be accessing from the UK or ROI but the software mistakenly thinks your location is outside this area, and so blocks your access to All 4. This is most likely caused by the way your Internet Service Provider sets up and manages Your account. We suggest you contact your Internet Service Provider and explain the problem, which they should be able to resolve.

If you feel the app is not performing well e.g. it takes a long time to load images and play video, you can make sure your device has sufficient memory by closing all unused apps and rebooting the device.
512 MB RAM (Random Access Memory) is the minimum required memory for All 4 to work on smartphones. You will require 1GB on tablets. However, 1 GB is also recommended to optimise performance on smartphones.
In addition, 20 MB of internal storage is required for caching images on disk. Therefore, if the internal memory is completely full and the app is running it may become very unstable and crash. -
Streaming requires an internet connection that's free of bottlenecks. However, the internet isn't a direct pipeline from the source to you. Streamed content passes through many other computers on its way to your PC via your ISP. If any one of them is carrying too much other traffic, the streamed content may be interrupted and pause. Our streamed content is 'buffered' to help prevent such problems, but sometimes delays are unavoidable. Usually the delay only lasts a few seconds, and the stream picks up where it stopped. Streaming problems are more likely to occur on a slow computer or device that has a smaller memory and processing power. Even with a fast computer or device, if you have too many applications open it could slow down your media streaming. If you notice things are sluggish, close all unnecessary applications and windows on your computer or device. The faster your network connection (modem, cable, DSL) and computer speed (in megahertz), the higher the quality of the stream.

Channel 4 does not have any regional programming differences like the BBC or ITV. The only regional differences we have is our advertising. Channel 4 plays to six regions, London, South of England, Midlands, North of England, Ulster and Scotland. Our Advertising Sales department sells each region separately and we run a different set of ads to each of the regions simultaneously.
-
A beta is an early release of a new feature. The All 4+ Beta is the first version of the ad-free* feature, so is currently limited to a fixed number of users. This allows us to gauge interest and optimise All 4+ before we launch it to everyone and across multiple platforms.
*Some programmes feature sponsorship messages and/or promotional trails for other programmes. Watch Live is excluded.
-
Some Internet Service Providers (ISPs) impose limits which could impact the volume of All 4 content you can view. You should check with your ISP if you are unsure about their download limits.

If you have hearing loss, more recent videos within the All 4 app have subtitles which can be accessed from within the playback menu and will be indicated with an 'S' Icon.

You can now access the All 4 service and play all the video clips on a Mac, PC and with Linux operating systems, but you have to use Flash, so you need to have Adobe Flash 12.0.0 or higher installed.

The All 4 application automatically detects the best available bandwidth to play out the most suitable quality video/audio format. If you are in an area with low Wi-Fi connectivity, the application will detect this and send a lower quality video stream and an alert message is displayed to indicate the connection is running too slowly to play video. As soon as the application detects you are in an area with better Wi-Fi connectivity, a higher quality video stream is transmitted.

Occasionally we are not able to subtitle the programmes we had hoped to. This can be due to technical problems with our transmission or the unexpectedly late delivery of a programme. We do understand how frustrating this is and we always try to fix the problem as quickly as possible.
If you continue to have subtitle problems across all of your channels (and not just one), make sure your receiver is set up correctly.
Most problems with subtitles used to be caused by poor reception. However, now that all TV is digital, if there is a reception problem, it will affect the video and the audio and the subtitles equally. -
All 4 programmes have content that is short and simple to understand. Content on All 4 website and native iOS/Android apps have information that is broken up into smaller bitesize pieces to ensure that users can digest the information more easily. Wherever possible, content has been presented in a list format, rather than in overly long paragraphs of information; this style of presentation is often easier for users to absorb.
All4.com website has meaningful headings and subheadings that introduces content correctly, which minimises the likelihood of users becoming confused. To achieve this, the headings are relevant to the content they introduce, acronyms and abbreviations have been expanded in their first instance of use on a page, and spacing between paragraphs have been carefully considered in order to aid in readability of the page.

Some ad-blocking software can prevent play buttons from appearing and the player may also appear to hang.
-
All4.com is accessible using VoiceOver and Talkback on iOS and Android devices, which will allow the content to be read back to the user using audio feedback of links, text and other functional items.
Browsing in context means using VoiceOver or Talkback to browse the entire page, giving you access to the text and all other items, such as links, headings and form fields, which are present on the page. Using one finger to swipe left and right will allow you to browse the previous item on the page, respectively.
Tapping an item once or using a single tap gesture will shift focus to your chosen item and tapping again or using the double tap gesture will open your selected item.
It is also possible to browse the All4.com site out of context with an iOS device, with Voiceover switched on, using the Rotor. This allows users to browse the page in terms of different elements such as browsing a list of links, headings and form controls. To use the rotor, take the following steps;
- Place two fingers on the screen;
- Move your fingers in a circular movement left or right to select a list of headings, links, form controls or other elements which may be present on the page;
- Use one finger to swipe up towards the speaker or down towards the home button to browse the previous or next item in the list, respectively.
To navigate out of context using TalkBack on an Android device swipe up or down with one finger to navigate through the navigation options. When you have reached to option you require, such as headings, then swipe left and right to navigate through the page via the headings.
The screen can also be zoomed on the mobile website using pinch and zoom gesture but not when using the native mobile app, due to the way content has been developed. It is possible to use the built-in zoom feature on certain mobile devices that have this accessibility support. Some devices have magnifiers built in to the accessibility settings that can be used with the app.
Content is audio described and Channel 4 are working to increase the number of programs available with audio description, which will allow visually impaired users a more descriptive experience of programmes on demand.

Subtitled content be found across our platforms. If subtitles are available an "S" button will be visible on the video player bar. Click on the "S" and the subtitles will load and display.
Subtitles are currently supported on the All4.com website, the iPhone/iPad app (for streaming), a number of Android mobile and tablet apps (for downloads and streaming), YouView, PS3, PS4, Amazon Fire, Freeview Play, Samsung devices and on our content available on Sky.We take accessibility seriously and whilst we aim to subtitle as much content as possible, unfortunately, not everything on All 4 will carry subtitles. In particular, this could be some of our older content that was subtitled live on our linear services or where the version of a programme on All 4 differs to the one originally broadcast.
-
It is certainly heading that way these days (2015). Of course, some old programmes weren't made in HD, so we have to “upconvert” those from standard definition (720x576 pixels). Since 2011, we requested all of our commissioned programmes to be made in HD.

In particular, this could be some of our older content that was subtitled live on our linear services or where the version of a programme on All 4 differs to the one originally broadcast. Subtitles are supported on most of our platforms and we are committed to continuing to extend accessibility on All 4 where possible.

It’s normal for the video to buffer for a short time before playing and on changing channel.
However, if the video continues to buffer for a long time the most likely cause is that your Internet connection isn’t fast enough, or you have an intermittent connection. This can sometimes occur if you are using a shared Internet connection and somebody else is using it at the same time. Another common reason is that you’re using a mobile data connection. But of course your Internet connection may just not be fast enough, in which case you should talk to your ISP.
Check your Internet connection speed by using a speed test site such as www.speedtest.net (we take no responsibility for third party websites). We recommend a minimum speed of 2 Mb/s, but the service will still function at lower bandwidths, albeit with reduced video quality. However, once the available bandwidth drops below about 700 Kb/s the player is unlikely to work at all.
-
No programmes are installed on your machine when you use All 4, although you might need to upgrade your existing software. For information on the minimum operating requirements see What are the minimum operating requirements to watch on All 4?,

When a show is live or completed very close to transmission, it is not possible to prepare the subtitles in advance. To provide subtitles on live programmes (or on programmes completed very close to transmission), we employ a technique known as broadcast stenography or stenocaptioning.
Stenography is a type of machine-written shorthand based on phonetics, as used to record proceedings in courts and for parliamentary committees. Our stenographers employ the same technique, with the difference that the shorthand outline is translated by computer and transmitted instantly to air. Our stenographers are very experienced, but when writing previously unseen material at speeds of up to 240 words per minute, some mistakes are inevitable. They may occur because a word may come up that has not been fed into the stenographer’s dictionary, in which case the computer will supply a "phonetic" translation.
Sometimes the speed at which they work makes it inevitable that a finger will be in the wrong place, and a simple word will translate as something completely different. Mistakes may in fact represent only one finger error or “typo”. We also use speech recognition technology to provide live subtitling. A speech subtitler listens to the commentary and "re-speaks" it into software which recognises the speech and translates it into subtitles. Speech recognition produces a different range of errors to stenography as the software attempts to "make sense" of the sounds it hears, so instead of seeing phonetic translations, words may appear out of context.
The average person speaks over 240 words a minute and although this is fine for the average listener, it is much too fast for anyone reading subtitles, especially with a picture to watch at the same time. Subtitlers, therefore, have to reduce the number of words that are said so that the subtitles can be read in the time it takes the speaker to say them. They must also synchronise the subtitles with the soundtrack and make it clear who is saying what. In order to achieve all of this, it is sometimes necessary to edit the soundtrack and careful yet quick decisions have to be made about how best to do this.
With all this in mind, a small delay between the words spoken on screen and the subtitles appearing is inevitable. We aim to keep this delay as short as possible, but it is often more noticeable on an unscripted programme such as Big Brother where often several people are talking at once. Subtitles on live programmes are therefore not precisely synchronised with the soundtrack, as you may expect in pre-recorded programmes. Our live team constantly work towards eliminating errors and consistently achieve extremely accurate results across a wide range of programmes. However, live programming presents some of the biggest challenges to live subtitlers and some mistakes are unfortunately inevitable.

Our aim is to try to minimise overheads so we can maximise our programme spend. We have looked at our call volumes and times of peak demand and have arranged the opening hours with this in mind.

For pre-recorded programmes, subtitlers edit the speech and make a careful decision about where to place the subtitles on the screen in order that no vital part of the picture is hidden. However, because the visual images that programme makers use tend to fill up the whole screen, there are inevitably occasions when the subtitles, wherever they are placed, end up covering a part of the picture that a viewer might wish to look at. We generally place our subtitles at the bottom of the screen because they are less obtrusive there and it is at this level that they are most comfortably read. However, for some programmes we deliberately choose to place the subtitles in a different position to avoid covering vital information. We do aim to avoid people’s mouths so that viewers who lip-read can do so. However, subtitles can appear at slightly different levels depending on whether you are watching on analogue, DTT or satellite.

While the more popular ad blocker browser plugins have the words "ad block" in their name, there are other plugins which also block advertising functionality.
Popular examples of these are "Ghostery", "Disconnect" and "Do Not Track Me". Having any of these on your system can trigger our Ad Blocker warning screen as they block our advertising service functionality.

All of the colour contrast combinations used on the All4.com website have been used with the intention to meet WCAG2 AA standard, ensuring that contrast is of a sufficient standard. However, if you find that there are areas that you are having difficulty when viewing All4.com on Internet Explorer, users can adjust the screen contrast by using 'high contrast' mode on a windows PC. This can be selected using the shift, Alt key, and 'Print Screen' (PrtScn) pressed together at the same time. Other browsers such as Chrome and Firefox have extensions and add-ons available to switch to high contrast mode. This will invert the screen, to provide a darker background and more vivid text display for users who experience low to medium visual problems.

There's a common complaint from the viewing public that commercials sound too loud when compared with programmes. Why is this? To gain impact, commercial advertisers tend to "compress" the sound levels which means they lift them all up to the higher end - and this is what creates the greater impact. However, when compared against programmes which have a wider dynamic range - a wider variation in sound levels - this can cause irritation, because the two types of sound treatment don't sit very well together. Channel 4 has recognised this as a problem for viewers, and we use perceived loudness meters which give us a measure of the way the brain perceives the actual loudness of the sound. This allows us to adjust the levels of commercials and other interstitial material in accordance with Ofcom guidelines, so that they no longer cause irritation when compared with the wide majority of programme types transmitted by Channel 4. We continue to strive for an even perceived loudness through all our programming junctions on all our services.

On-screen logos are very much a part of the multi-channel world and being competitive in this environment is tough. Channel 4 tries to maintain this competitiveness by making high quality programmes that people want to watch and by establishing loyalty, so that when a viewer is watching television, they watch Channel 4 channels rather than the hundreds of other choices.

The content of films and acquired programmes shown on television must comply with Ofcom Broadcasting Code (Ofcom is the regulator for television in the UK). No film refused classification by the BBFC can be broadcast, unless it has subsequently been classified or the BBFC have confirmed that it would not be rejected according to the standards currently operating. The Ofcom Code may also mean that changes can be required to permit more flexible scheduling. Of course, if this is necessary, every effort is made to make changes sensitively and in such a way that the audience experience is not compromised.

There are specific accessibility features built into YouView platform which may be helpful for many users with visual impairments. However, not all YouView Accessibility settings currently work within the app. The app does have a high contrast style, which is supported and has highly visible focus highlighting when navigating the content. These features are very well supported for users when viewing programmes on the All 4 big screen app on a TV. Unfortunately, the 'Zoom' function on YouView does not currently work once the app has been selected. Some televisions may enable users to increase the size of the screen. So please check your manufacturer's instructions for details.

Firstly programmes need to be shot and made in HD and then they are played-out by us, to you, in High Definition.
It requires an entirely separate broadcast stream from standard definition (SD) broadcasting. It has a 16:9 aspect ratio, (“widescreen”) and in the UK it transmits at a picture size of 1920 pixels wide & 1080 pixels tall. In the UK, we call this format “1080i” (the “i” stands for interlaced). Channel 4 uses only this format, which has been adopted by all UK broadcasters. We use a newer transmission method to fit all the increased picture data into, so older set-top boxes that don’t say “HD” most likely won’t get the services.

Wi-Fi is a short-range static wireless connection. To use it for internet access, your device must connect (over Wi-Fi) to a wireless router – such as the one at your favourite coffee shop that allows customers free internet access. Mobile data is usually available on your device as part of a paid contract or on pay as you go services. It allows you to browse the internet or stream content anywhere you can access a strong enough signal.

This is a new format, and some UHDTV’s have appeared on the market. Sometime people call this “4K”. The picture size is even greater than HD, and is increased from 1920 pixels wide and 1080 pixels tall (HD) to 3840 pixels wide by 2160 pixels tall (UHD). That’s about four times more definition.
This is in its infancy, and although there are TV’s on the market, there is not yet a transmission method that broadcasters can use, but there is a great deal of development of this new technology. -

Every programme made available as part of the All 4 service has a rights period or "length of availability" associated with it. An episode which has been broadcast in the past 30 days on one of our channels will have certain "catch-up" rights, and the episode will only be available in line with this rights window. The expiry date reflects this window, and this will differ from programme to programme. If there is no expiry date displayed this means that the programme is available on-demand for at least the next 30 days.

It is an unfortunate reality that television audiences fall dramatically when credits start to roll and in the increasingly competitive multi-channel environment, all channels are under pressure to retain viewers. We have to use every opportunity at our disposal to let our viewers know what is on offer in subsequent schedules. An announcement over the end credits of a programme is an effective means of keeping our viewers informed and reduces the likelihood of their switching over. When we do schedule announcements during credits, we try to ensure that they are appropriate to the programme and remain sensitive to the context of the programme or film’s ending.

Anyone wishing to become a presenter will need to produce a showreel to forward to production companies and casting agents. To help you we have listed some points to remember when making one:
- A showreel should be interesting, fun and certainly no more than 4-5 minutes in length
- Include several short scenes e.g. reporting from a special event or interviewing someone in a mock studio
- Remember that the first minute is the most crucial to gain the viewers attention
- Don't go to great expense to make the showreel, try and get family or friends to shoot it for you
- When you send your showreel to a production company enclose a covering letter and ensure your name, age and contact details are clearly marked on it
- Never send your master copy to a production company - they can't guarantee its return
- Production companies may take some time to respond, especially if they are not currently casting
PACT (Producers Alliance for Cinema and Television) have a directory which lists contact details for independent production companies. Contact Pact to subscribe to their online directory of independent production companies.

You’ll need a PC, tablet or smartphone, a connection to the Internet (either a fixed-line, Wi-Fi, or mobile data connection), and a standard web browser (the service has been tested with Internet Explorer, Chrome, Firefox and Safari).
To use the player on a PC you’ll need the Adobe Flash plug-in (version 10.2 or later). If you have an earlier version of Flash you’ll be prompted to download and install the latest version. To check your Flash version or to update it, please visit: http://helpx.adobe.com/flash-player/kb/find-version-flash-player.html (we take no responsibility for third party websites).
To experience the best quality video you’ll need an Internet connection of at least 2 Mb/s (although the player will automatically select the maximum possible bandwidth if your connection is slower).
On mobile devices that don’t support Flash an HTML5 player is loaded. This player has a little less functionality than the Flash version (e.g. no Electronic Programme Guide), but it will still allow you to switch between channels and stream the shows live on all your devices.
