All4.com website

The following FAQs relate to the accessibility of the All4.com website.

I have a visual impairment

All4.com is a responsive site and can be zoomed up to 200% with no loss of content, this will allow the page to wrap, and resize in line with the screen resolution and size. On a desktop browser to zoom the screen use the Ctrl key and '+' (plus key) or '-' (minus key).

Most of our recent content will have subtitles available, if subtitles are available, there will be a 'S' icon on the video. Subtitles are activated by selecting the subtitles icon.

Audio settings can be adjusted via your mobile, tablet or desktop PC settings

When navigating through the menus and programs, there is a highly visible focus indicator present on screen which will help many keyboard only or switch users when moving to selectable elements such as links or buttons. This colour change should also be visible for mouse users, where you will see a visual change when moving your mouse cursor over a selectable element.

All4.com is currently compatible with JAWS, NVDA and VoiceOver Screen reading software, and works with current screen magnification applications such as Zoomtext or Supernova. This allows the screen to be magnified beyond the usual browser zoom sizes, up to 64x the actual size of text on screen. These software programmes can also assist users with the aid of audio feedback when tabbed-to or using the mouse on links/buttons on the page.

All4.com is accessible using VoiceOver and Talkback on iOS and Android devices, which will allow the content to be read back to the user using audio feedback of links, text and other functional items.

Browsing in context means using VoiceOver or Talkback to browse the entire page, giving you access to the text and all other items, such as links, headings and form fields, which are present on the page. Using one finger to swipe left and right will allow you to browse the previous item on the page, respectively.

Tapping an item once or using a single tap gesture will shift focus to your chosen item and tapping again or using the double tap gesture will open your selected item.

It is also possible to browse the All4.com site out of context with an iOS device, with Voiceover switched on, using the Rotor. This allows users to browse the page in terms of different elements such as browsing a list of links, headings and form controls. To use the rotor, take the following steps;

  1. Place two fingers on the screen;
  2. Move your fingers in a circular movement left or right to select a list of headings, links, form controls or other elements which may be present on the page;
  3. Use one finger to swipe up towards the speaker or down towards the home button to browse the previous or next item in the list, respectively.

To navigate out of context using TalkBack on an Android device swipe up or down with one finger to navigate through the navigation options. When you have reached to option you require, such as headings, then swipe left and right to navigate through the page via the headings.

The screen can also be zoomed on the mobile website using pinch and zoom gesture but not when using the native mobile app, due to the way content has been developed. It is possible to use the built-in zoom feature on certain mobile devices that have this accessibility support. Some devices have magnifiers built in to the accessibility settings that can be used with the app.

Content is audio described and Channel 4 are working to increase the number of programs available with audio description, which will allow visually impaired users a more descriptive experience of programmes on demand.

If you want to change the size of what you see in Windows, you have two options. You can change the size of what is on screen or change the resolution. Changing the size is usually the best option.Open Start , select Settings > System > Display.

Under Scale and layout, check the setting under Change the size of text, apps, and other items. We suggest you use the percentage marked "(Recommended)."

If that doesn't solve your problem, under Resolution, select a new value. We suggest you stick with the resolution marked "(Recommended)."

Note: If your resolution was fine and recently changed (things appear huge, for example), your graphics driver might need to be updated. Run Windows Update to get the latest driver. If it's just the size of things in your web browser windows that changed, try pressing the Ctrl+0 (zero) keys to return the zoom level to 100%.

Changing the size of the All 4 Player screen:

You can watch programmes in small, medium or full-screen view by clicking on the icons in the bottom right hand corner of the All 4 player. This will give options for the 'Pop out player' as well as 'Full screen'.

We are looking to roll this service out on to more of our platforms as soon as possible.

To register and watch on All 4 please use a more recent browser. See our minimum operating requirements for more details.

Screen reader users with Jaws 18 or above may use the Chrome browser to sign in or register to watch programmes, as this will function as expected.

For anyone using an older version of Jaws (prior to Jaws version 18) we recommend using NVDA and Firefox to give an optimal experience. For getting and setting up NVDA, please see their user guide.

I have difficultly reading or understanding content

All of the colour contrast combinations used on the All4.com website have been used with the intention to meet WCAG2 AA standard, ensuring that contrast is of a sufficient standard.

However, if you find that there are areas that you are having difficulty with when viewing All4.com, browsers such as Chrome and Firefox have extensions and add-ons available to switch to high contrast mode. This will invert the screen, to provide a darker background and more vivid text display for users who experience low to medium visual problems.

All 4 programmes have content that is short and simple to understand. Content on All 4 website and native iOS/Android apps have information that is broken up into smaller bitesize pieces to ensure that users can digest the information more easily. Wherever possible, content has been presented in a list format, rather than in overly long paragraphs of information; this style of presentation is often easier for users to absorb.

All4.com website has meaningful headings and subheadings that introduces content correctly, which minimises the likelihood of users becoming confused. To achieve this, the headings are relevant to the content they introduce, acronyms and abbreviations have been expanded in their first instance of use on a page, and spacing between paragraphs have been carefully considered in order to aid in readability of the page.
