Vail, together with its sister ski area Beaver Creek, has held two World Championships (1989 and 1999) and is likely to bid again for the 2009 event. The only other American resort to have held a World Championships is Aspen in 1950
The World Cup downhill run is called the Birds Of Prey course. It was designed by 1972 Olympic Champion Bernhard Russi and held its first international race in December 1997
Hermann Maier has dominated the downhill course in Beaver Creek since its opening in 1997, winning seven World Cup and World Championships events
Vale is home to the 130-year-old Colorado ski museum, which includes exhibits of equipment used by the 10th Mountain Division ski troops in the Second World War
In 1999, Norway's Lasse Kjus made history in the resort, winning a joint gold medal with Hermann Maier in the World Championship super-G event
