The Lowdown
Shiga Kogen is located in the Chuba Sangaku region, the Japanese version of the Alps, which is in the centre of Honshu (Japan's main island)
The resort is the biggest in Japan; with 1500 acres of piste it's twice the size of Vail, the largest ski area in North America. In all, Shiga has 20 ski areas
When Nagano hosted the Winter Olympics in 1998, Shiga held the slalom and various snowboarding events
The first World Cup event to be held in Shiga was the giant slalom in 1989. Since then the resort has become a regular host of World Cup slalom and giant slalom races
Japan was supposed to hold the 1940 winter Olympics, but they were abandoned after the outbreak of World War Two
