The Lowdown
  • Sestriere was originally founded by the Agnelli Family, owners of Fiat, in the 1920s. It is part of a huge ski network called the Milky Way, which extends into nearby France
  • The Banchetta slope is renowned for its difficulty and in 1967, the first year of the World Cup, held two downhills for both men and women
  • The resort was the first in Europe to hold night racing, with the 1997 World Championships slalom events taking place under ski lights
  • Past World Cup winners include Permin Zurbriggen, Marc Giardelli and more recently Janica Kostelic
  • Sestriere will play host to the winter Olympics Alpine disciplines in 2006
