The Lowdown
Sestriere was originally founded by the Agnelli Family, owners of Fiat, in the 1920s. It is part of a huge ski network called the Milky Way, which extends into nearby France
The Banchetta slope is renowned for its difficulty and in 1967, the first year of the World Cup, held two downhills for both men and women
The resort was the first in Europe to hold night racing, with the 1997 World Championships slalom events taking place under ski lights
Past World Cup winners include Permin Zurbriggen, Marc Giardelli and more recently Janica Kostelic
Sestriere will play host to the winter Olympics Alpine disciplines in 2006
