The Lowdown
Garmisch and Partenkirchen, originally two small resorts, have now grown into one large town after combining to host the Winter Olympics in 1936. The resort is often just known as GAP
The Kreuzeck downhill course, first used in the 1970s, is renowned for its icy conditions and treacherous turns on the bottom section of the hill
On New Year's Day the resort hosts the famous Four Jumps tournament, the highlight of the Nordic ski calendar
World Cup winners include Hermann Maier, Stephan Eberharter and Fritz Strobl
Garmisch is Germany's top winter sports destination, lying in the shadow of Zugspitze, the country's highest mountain at 2966m
