The Lowdown
  • The Verte Des Houches downhill course is renowned for its steep, icy final section
  • One of the most famous resorts in the world, Chamonix is known for its fantastic back-country skiing
  • The first winter Olympics took place here in 1924
  • The resort hosts both downhill and slalom racing and past winners include Ingemar Stenmark and Alberto Tomba
  • In 1997 Hermann Maier, racing in his first World Cup downhill, crashed out breaking his hand
