The Lowdown
Bormio is traditionally a resort for the intermediate but the Pista Stelvio downhill course is thought by many to be the toughest on the World Cup circuit. It's bumpy, often very icy and skiers struggle to stay in control with top speeds of 130kmh
The first World Cup race held in Bormio was the women's slalom in 1980. The circuit did not return until 1993 but it's now a regular stop-off, with the event normally held over the Christmas period
The resort hosted the 1985 World Championship, with Switzerland's Permin Zubriggen winning the blue riband event, the men's downhill
Picabo Street, Katia Seizinger and Hannes Trinkl are all past World Cup winners here
The town's origins are linked to its thermal waters, renowned since Roman times. The resort's nine springs are still popular today thanks to their recuperative powers
