The Alta Badia ski area includes the resorts of Corvara, Colfosco, La Villa, San Cassiano and Pedraces
La Villa has been a fixture on the men's giant slalom circuit since 1985, with the World Cup failing to return on just three occasions
The giant slalom slope, the Grand Risa, is famed for its steep start and long finish straight - a real problem for racers when their legs start to burn with all the tight turns. The gradient is also steep, at times reaching 53 per cent
Italian ski legend Alberto Tomba dominated the giant slalom in the 1980s and 1990s winning four World Cup titles
The people of Alta Badia are traditionally called Ladins after the Raetoroman people who used to live in the area. Ladin is still spoken in some parts, with the La Villa resort being called 'La lla' valley
