Think you're good enough for a place on the British Ski and Snowboard Team? Snowsport GB's Fiona McNeilly tells you how to give it a shot.
Join your local club
There are three main different age categories for racers: children (11-15), juniors (15-18) and seniors (18 plus) and the British team has members at every level. The important thing, whatever group you're in, is to join your local ski club and start practising regularly.
Start racing
The sooner you start racing the better. Your local dry slope will often have race meetings for its members and many operate FAST Clinics; these concentrate on Fitness and Ski Technique for all standards with a full programme of pre-ski preparation. Courses include basic skiing and snowboarding, racing and more specialist courses such as moguls. Dry slopes and ski domes are also a good place to meet other like-minded people who are also keen to compete.
Win local events
Once you start regularly winning events within your club, you'll want to race against champions from other parts of your region. There is a good regional network of dry slope skiing which operates during the summer and you can also check the snowsportgb.com website for a full calendar of regional events.
Compete nationally
There are national Alpine and dry slope championships held every year and this is the best chance for an athlete to shine. At senior levels selection for the British team is made by hard and fast selection criteria, basically where you finish in the nationals, while at junior level it's a mixture of results, attitude and potential.
