| World Club Cup - game by game history 1980-Present |
|
Stormy history
Originally called the Inter-Continental Cup but now named the World Club Championship although it only involves winners of the European Cup and South Americas Copa Libertadores. UEFA General Secretary Henri Delauney first suggested the annual challenge match although the early days were littered with controversy, rough play and too intense rivalry. Home and away legs, often leading to further play-offs, were also becoming harder to schedule.
Throughout the 1970s it became a non event with the European Cup winners often refusing to take part. But when Tokyo offered to stage the game in 1980 it took off again and has been staged there annually ever since.
Real Madrid, kings of Europe in the 1950s, were coming to the end of their glory days when the competition got under way. Up to 2001, Milans six appearances - with three wins and three defeats - make them the most successful club in the tournaments history, pipping Uruguays Penarol and Nacional Montevideo. Argentinas Independiente have also made it through six times although only winning twice.
