Coupe de la Ligue: OM bow out

Wednesday 26 October, 2005

Marseille were knocked out of the Coupe de la Ligue by their bogey team Bordeaux on Wednesday, while Paris Saint-Germain thrashed Troyes and Monaco edged past Dijon.

Marseille crash out
The tie of the round came at the Stade Chaban-Delmas where Bordeaux hosted their old rivals Marseille. A 1-0 win for Les Girondins means that Marseille have still not won at Bordeaux for 28 years.

Missing Franck Ribéry and Mamadou Niang through injury, the visitors were lacking penetration in attack, and the only goal of a disappointing game did not arrive until the 86th minute when Abdoulaye Meïté put Bruno Cheyrou’s cross into his own net.

PSG and Monaco prevail
On a night when there were a host of Ligue 1 casualties, PSG showed no signs of nerves as they disposed of top-flight strugglers Troyes 4-1 at the Parc des Princes. Pedro Pauleta scored twice, with Paris’ other goals coming from Jean-Michel Badiane and a Blaise Kouassi own goal. Benjamin Nivet netted a late consolation for Troyes.

Monaco failed to turn on a show at the Stade Louis II, but after recent results they will have been satisfied with the 1-0 win over Ligue 2 side Dijon, set up by a Gerard Lopez goal on the hour. Meanwhile, nearby Nice accounted for their second-flight opponents Châteauroux, winning 2-0 thanks to a Mamadou Bagayoko brace in extra-time.

Ligue 2 teams pull rank
Among the Ligue 1 sides to go out to lower-league opposition were Metz, although their 1-0 defeat by Ligue 2 leaders Sedan was hardly a surprise. Nadir Belhadj scored after 53 minutes to pile more misery on bottom-of-the-table Metz.

A bigger upset came at Montpellier, where the Second Division outfit knocked out Rennes 1-0 thanks to a Jérôme Lafourcade goal seven minutes before the end.

Stéphane Samson scored the only goal of the game in Normandy as another Ligue 2 side, Caen, was victorious over supposedly superior opponents in Strasbourg.

All Ligue 1 ties
Auxerre struck late on through Benjani (87) to clinch a 3-2 win away at Lens. Les Sang et Or twice took the lead through Aruna Dindane (20) and Olivier Thomert (56), only to be pegged back by Auxerre, for whom Luigi Pieroni (33) and Yohan Demont (og. 85) were on target.

Meanwhile, Adrian Sarkissan’s spot kick in the 89th minute clinched a 1-0 win for Nancy over Sochaux, and Lille ran out 2-0 winners at Saint-Etienne despite fielding a weakened starting eleven. Bonfim Dante (15) and Peter Franquart (19) were the Lille scorers.

And finally…
Le Mans saw off Clermont 2-1 with a Chiguy Lucau brace for the home side, while Thomas Regnier scored for the visitors. An Arnaud Gonzalez goal after 18 minutes gifted Guingamp a 1-0 win away to Laval, and Daniel Moreira’s late strike clinched a hard-fought win for Toulouse by the same scoreline at Le Havre.

Ajaccio beat Grenoble 4-2 after extra-time, with goals from Lucas Parreira (51), Marcial Robin (75), Kaba Diawara (107) and Christophe Mandrichi (109).
