Fabio Capello has confirmed he convinced David Trezeguet to stay at Juventus when he was on the verge of completing a move to Barcelona.
The French hitman had been heavily linked with both Barcelona and Chelsea during the summer with figures of £20m bandied about in the press.
“It is true that I called David when he was close to completing negotiations with Barcelona,” said the Juventus Coach. “If I had not intervened at that precise moment, we would be talking about a different career path right now.”
The 28-year-old striker joined Juve from Monaco in 2000, having signed the contract a few days before scoring the Golden Goal against Italy in the European Championship Final.
He was crowned joint Capocannoniere with Piacenza’s Dario Hubner thanks to 24 goals in 2001-02, but a succession of injuries had limited his appearances in recent years and there was strong talk of a move away from the club.
This season he has already scored 11 goals in 13 official appearances between Serie A and the Champions' League, taking his career tally for Juventus to 107 more than Michel Platini and John Charles.
Capello outlined the reasons for the current success story within the Bianconeri. “Here at Juventus, we work as a group. This is a team and has that spirit of togetherness. Nobody makes a decision without consulting the others.”
