Borussia Dortmund President Reinhard Rauball has revealed that the Bundesliga club are still hoping to sign Rennes hot-shot Alexander Frei in the winter break.
Rennes general manager Pierre Dréossi moved to stamp out rumours that the Swiss star could be Germany-bound two weeks ago, but his message has seemingly not reached Dortmund.
“We will be having talks with Frei’s agent and with his club to see what is possible,” Rauball said on Wednesday.
Dortmund, who have lost Jan Koller and Lars Ricken to injury, are keen to sign the 26-year-old, who was top scorer in Ligue 1 last term, either permanently or on loan.
Dréossi laughed off all talk of a loan deal at a press conference held ahead of Thursday’s UEFA Cup clash with Shakhtar Donetsk.
“His agent told me that Dortmund were interested, but we’ve not been contacted so I have nothing to say to Dortmund,” he explained. “Anyway, since when are we going loan out Frei, or another player for that matter, just because another team has injury problems?”.
Frei extended his Rennes contract in the summer and is tied to the club until 2007.
