Marseille President Pape Diouf has admitted that the club are considering making a bid for Auxerre striker Benjani Mwaruwari.
The Zimbabwe international recently signed a new deal keeping him at the Stade de l'Abbé-Deschamps until 2009, yet OM are one of a number of sides hoping to bring him in during the January transfer window.
"He's on a list of players we are looking at, with two or three others," announced Diouf. "The problem is that he's in line to contest the African Cup of Nations.
"Therefore we have to give it some thought, and the Auxerre officials are going to give us their answer early this week."
The 27-year-old angered his employers by showing up late for pre-season training and he has not done himself any favours by scoring just one goal so far this season.
He is still attracting a lot of interest, however, with Newcastle said to be keen to sign him as a long-term replacement for Alan Shearer.
Marseille have also been monitoring the situation of Liverpool's Djibril Cissé, but the former Auxerre man has recently enjoyed a more regular run in the side and manager Rafael Benitez seems unlikely to sanction any transfer.
