We showed heart, says Fernandez

Monday 28 November, 2005

Marseille Coach Jean Fernandez was delighted with his team's belief and discipline as they came from behind to beat Monaco 2-1 on Sunday.

Camel Meriem put the visitors ahead early in the first half, but OM hit back through Wilson Oruma and Sabri Lamouchi after the break to register their third straight victory in all competitions.

"We started the match well, yet their goal was a blow and we began playing deeper after that," commented Fernandez. "After half-time we were able to stay organised, though, and we kept pressing at them.

"They're a very strong side but we deserved the victory and we owed it to our heart and our discipline.

"I'm also pleased we managed to make it three good home wins on the trot. The players knew that, without three points tonight, it would have been very hard for us after the winter break."

The Mediterranean club still lie ninth in Ligue 1, however, trailing yesterday's opponents on goal difference, but they earned grudging praise from Monaco boss Francesco Guidolin:

"After our goal we took control of the game and we had a chance to score another. I think that's where we lost the match.

"Having said that, Marseille are a good team and I'd say a draw would have been the fairest result."
