Opposition and teammates were full of praise for Franck Ribéry after his wonder-strike gave Marseille victory over Nantes on Saturday.
The match was locked at 1-1 with under 20 minutes left when the France Under-21 international latched onto a Lorik Cana pass nearly 30m from goal and unleashed an unstoppable drive that cannoned in off the underside of the crossbar.
“It was one for the scrap-book,” marvelled Marseille coach and mentor Jean Fernandez.
“I’ve known Franck a long time and I know he’ll keep working hard and improving.
“He’s able to accelerate the game in the fifth minute but also five minutes from full-time.”
Marseille defender Habib Beye was also happy that the number seven is wearing the white and sky-blue this season.
“One thing is for sure, it’s better that Franck Ribéry is on your side rather than the opposition team,” said the Senegal defender.
Nantes ‘keeper Mickaël Landreau, who had already seen a Ribéry free-kick come back off his crossbar, was left speechless by the winning goal.
“What can you say? He’s on a high and everything he touches turns to gold,” said Landreau.
“It was a great floating shot that hit the underside of the bar before going in. The goal gave Marseille the win just after we’d done so well to get back in the match.”
The man himself also claimed he was delighted to have struck the winner:
“It’s the most beautiful goal of my career. It’s great to have scored at the Vélodrome, in front of the Marseille supporters, I’m happy for them and I’ll keep doing everything I can to make them happy.”
