Puel slams Monaco tactics

Monday 2 May, 2005

Lille boss Claude Puel (pictured) claims Monaco needed to resort to long-ball tactics and putting pressure on the referee to win Sunday’s key Ligue 1 clash.

Goals from Sébastien Squillaci and Emmanuel Adebayor sealed a 2-0 win for Monaco, who close to within a point of second-placed Lille.

But Puel feels his team were hard done by after seeing striker Matt Moussilou twice signalled offside incorrectly and defender Stathis Tavlaridis sent off for two bookings.

“I’m disappointed to lose because Monaco hardly created any chances. I think 2-0 is a harsh scoreline,” said Puel who used to coach the principality club.

“Monaco played a spoiling game. They bombarded us relentlessly with long and high balls," he continued.

“But it is during matches like these that my young team learns. We knew that this team was capable of applying a lot of pressure, especially on the referee,” added Puel.

With four matches remaining, Lille and Monaco are now well placed to qualify for the Champions' League alongside Lyon, who will become champions if they beat Ajaccio at the weekend.

Marseille, who are fourth, are now four points behind Monaco.
