Pauleta cagey on PSG future

Friday 13 May, 2005

Paris Saint-Germain striker Pedro Pauleta has told club officials he wants certain assurances before signing a new contract.

The 32-year-old has one year left on his current deal and admits he has received offers from a number of clubs, including teams in the Premiership.

"It's true that a few clubs have been in contact with my agent, but that doesn't worry me. I'm concentrated on staying here," he said. "But it's important for me to sit down and talk with the officials about certain issues.

"I need to know a few things. I'm the kind of player who's never caused a problem and I have a right to know what's going on. When I do, I'll make my decision."

The club are in a transitional period with new President Pierre Blayau slowly beginning to make his presence felt, but uncertainty surrounds the future of Coach Laurent Fournier.

"Things keep moving here. The officials have changed and we don't know who'll be coaching the team next year. I think Lolo [Fournier] has done a good job, I'm happy with him.

"If he stays, that's already a good start. But it's not just the name of the next Coach that will decide what I choose to do."

"I've got another year on my contract and I see myself continuing here. I'm happy, but I don't want to experience another season like this one. It can't go on like that."

The capital outfit are currently eighth in the standings and have failed miserably in their attempt to qualify for the Champions' League next term, but Pauleta denies that will play a role in his decision.

"Every player wants to play in the Champions' League and I'm no different. But when it's not possible, it's not possible. That's not the most important thing for me."
