Preview: France bank on big guns
Saturday 26 March, 2005

France Coach Raymond Domenech is giving Thierry Henry and David Trezeguet as long as possible to prove their fitness ahead of tonight's big game.

Les Bleus' first-choice front two trained with the rest of the squad on Thursday and Friday and should be in the starting line-up against Switzerland at the Stade de France - despite missing recent games with their clubs through injury.

Henry has not featured since picking up a calf injury playing for Arsenal against Bayern Munich on February 9, while Juventus ace Trezeguet has been out with an ankle problem for two weeks.

But coach Raymond Domenech, who had originally planned to name his starting line-up on Thursday, will wait until the last moment before making his final choice. Vikash Dhorasoo (shin) and Gaël Givet (fatigue) are also doubts.

"On the whole they are all well and making good progress," said the France boss on Friday evening. "They have been training pretty much normally and their physical state is not worrying any more."

But Domenech added: "Whatever happens, if there is the slightest doubt, I won't take a risk."

Lyon forward Sylvain Wiltord could move into attack should either Henry or Trezeguet miss out, while Ludovic Giuly is another option.

Domenech is desperate to have his best players on the pitch for arguably the most important match since he took charge last summer. France have drawn all five home games under Domenech, scoring just two goals, and can ill-afford another slip against the Swiss.

Jakob Kuhn's side start the game three points adrift of the Group 4 leaders - the Republic of Ireland, France and Israel - but have a game in hand.

Patrick Vieira will anchor the French midfield alongside Marseille's Benoit Pedretti, while Vikash Dhorasoo of AC Milan should start on the left after excelling in that position against Sweden last month.

Domenech has been forced to reshuffle his defence following an injury to Sébastien Squillaci. Newcastle's Jean-Alain Boumsong could partner Givet in the centre, with William Gallas on the left and Willy Sagnol on the right.

Fabien Barthez, meanwhile, keeps his place despite admitting this week that he was becoming disillusioned with football and is reluctant to travel to Israel for Wednesday's qualifier because of security fears.

The Switzerland players have made their goal clear this week. "Our aim is to try and get a point," said PSV Eindhoven midfielder Johann Vogel. "That alone would be a great achievement."

Kuhn is without the Yakin brothers, Murat and Hakin, who are injured and suspended respectively, while teenage star Johan Vonlanthen is out of favour at Brescia and unlikely to start. Kuhn will be hoping that Alexander Frei's recent goalscoring form continues. The Rennes striker has netted five in his last five Ligue 1 matches and is the top scorer in France with 14 strikes.

France (probable): Barthez - Sagnol, Gallas, Boumsong, Givet - Vieira (cap), Pedretti, Dhorasoo, Wiltord - Henry, Trezeguet

Switzerland (probable): Zuberbuhler (cap) - Degan, Senderos, Muller, Spycher - Gygax, Lonfat, Vogel, Ziegler - Cabanas - Frei
