Lorient are sitting pretty at the top of Ligue 2 as the only team left with a 100% record after two matches.

Christian Gourcuff's side may have lost talismanic striker Bakary Koné in the off-season, but goals from Virgile Reset and former Saint-Etienne star Stéphane Pédron gave them a 2-1 victory over Laval in front of a bumper crowd.

They finished 10th in the Division last term, but the early signs are encouraging and the locals clearly believe they can mount a challenge. Meanwhile, even less used to scaling the heights are Gueugnon and Créteil, currently third and fourth after seeing off Valenciennes 2-0 and drawing 1-1 with Bastia respectively.

Also on four points are Châteauroux, who came in 5th last time around and look to be shaping up as potential promotion contenders again following a 3-0 triumph away to Le Havre. That result leaves their opponents bottom, having already shipped five goals and perhaps staring at another relegation dogfight after narrowly escaping in 2004-05.

The pack chasing Lorient are completed by Montpellier (1-1 draw with Brest), Sedan (2-1 winners over promoted-side Sète) and last year's Ligue 1 whipping-boys Istres (0-0 stalemate away to Guingamp).

Xavier Gravelaine's men are clearly coping with relegation from the elite better than Bastia, who are still to register their first victory. Elsewhere, the third side to drop into the Division, Caen, have rescheduled their fixture with Amiens for September 2 as a result of refurbishment work still ongoing at the Stade Michel d'Ornano.
