Toulouse are still looking for their first home win since March after Saint-Etienne came from behind to claim a point at the Municipal Stadium on Sunday.
The result leaves Les Violets languishing in 15th place, while Les Verts remain unbeaten after four matches and sit eighth in the table.
Desperate to rediscover the home form that saw them occupy a place in the top five in the early months of last season, Toulouse started at a fast pace and Daniel Moreira tested Jérémy Janot with a swirling shot on eight minutes.
The home side produced some good approach play but the final pass was all too often lacking, and they should have gone behind 11 minutes before half-time. Pascal Feindouno’s shot deflected into the path of Frédéric Mendy but his effort flew wide with the goal gaping.
Toulouse did break the deadlock four minutes before half-time when Santos earned a free kick on the edge of the Saint-Etienne box. Moreira struck a sublime shot to become the first player to beat Janot this season.
Jérémy Mathieu tried to make it two with powerful shot just after the interval, before the visitors came back strongly.
Vincent Hognon headed narrowly wide of the Toulouse goal with a corner on 49 minutes, then, just before the hour mark, Saint-Etienne struck. David Hellebuyck's sweetly-struck volley left Christophe Revault with no chance and earned Saint-Etienne a well-deserved point.
