Toulouse secured their third win on the spin on Sunday, as goals from Achille Emana and Bryan Bergougnoux saw off Auxerre.
Like Toulouse, Auxerre went into the match in good form having won their last three Ligue 1 outings. But it was Les Violets, fresh from scoring four goals at Strasbourg last weekend, who started the game the better and created the first chances.
First Santos escaped on the right after 15 minutes and tested Fabien Cool with a stinging shot, then moments later the Tunisian was denied by an excellent challenge from Mathieu Berson after latching onto a Bergougnoux cross.
Bergougnoux’s influence started the grow, and the former Lyon player went close to opening the mark himself when he rounded off a good dribble with a ferocious shot that flashed just wide of Cool’s post.
Auxerre could not get in the match and they were indebted to their veteran ‘keeper again shortly after the half four, as Julien Cardy took a return pass from Santos before shooting directly at Cool. Toulouse’s best chance of the first period fell to Bergougnoux who, after latching onto Emana’s deflected shot, was denied by the impressive Cool.
The Auxerre custodian injured himself in making the save, however, and was replaced by Sébastien Hamel at the break.
Cool’s departure spelt the end of the visitors’ resistance too as, in the first minute of the second period, Emana used all his power to thunder a shot through the legs of the unfortunate Hamel from a tight angle.
Les Violets secured the points with a second goal seven minutes later, Bergougnoux deceiving Hamel with a free kick. Auxerre's replacement 'keeper had conceded two goals without even touching the ball.
Auxerre boss Jacques Santini threw on Abou Diaby to partner Benjani for the closing stages, but the Burgundy team were unable to get back into the match.
