Rennes twice came from behind to consign Bordeaux to their fourth consecutive League draw at the Stade de la Route de Lorient on Wednesday.
Bordeaux flew out of the blocks against a Rennes side themselves full of confidence after registering two wins on the trot. The visitors went ahead after just four minutes as Vladimir Smicer made it two goals in two games when he converted from the spot after Rennes defender Jacques Faty had brought down Julien Faubert.
Roared on by their adoring public Rennes rallied, led by the irrepressible Olivier Monterrubio and just before the half-hour mark Bordeaux 'keeper Ulrich Ramé turned an Alexander Frei effort around the post. Rennes then equalised from the resulting corner when Swedish midfielder Kim Kallstrom powered home his header from close range.
After the break Rennes appeared to be feeling the effects of playing their third game in seven days and they paid for giving the visitors too much latitude in the 52nd minute when defender David Jemmali casually picked out the head of forward Marouane Chamakh to restore Les Girondins' lead.
Five minutes later Smicer could have made the game safe for Bordeaux but his effort came back off Andreas Isaksson's post. Monterrubio then ensured the homeside would not go home empty handed with a majestic free-kick that left Ramé rooted to the spot, on 61 minutes.
The draw sees Bordeaux in fifth place with 13 points, level with Saint-Etienne and Auxerre while Rennes are 12th with 10 points.
