Metz secured their first win of the season at the 14th time of asking on Saturday, condemning troubled Ajaccio to their fifth defeat on the spin.
The Lorraine side went into the weekend rock bottom in the standings with just four points to their name - and both Coaches Joel Muller and Rolland Courbis knew that tonight’s meeting in Lorraine was a genuine six-pointer.
Metz started in fine fashion, with Nasser Ouadah firing over Stéphane Porato’s goal, before fit-again striker Hervé Tum was also off target following a good run.
Desperate to get a win in front of their despairing supporters, Metz seemed to be trying too hard at times, particularly when Babacar Gueye fired wide from a good position on 17 minutes.
Indeed with Ajaccio struggling to create anything at all, the first shot on target of the game did not arrive until the 56th minute, Ouadah seeing his strike well held by Porato.
Playing against his former club, Ouadah was Metz’s best performer and he helped create the opening goal on the hour mark, playing a return pass to Gueye who slotted a shot past the Ajaccio ‘keeper.
Tum could have doubled Metz’s lead, but the home fans had their hearts in their mouths when Ajaccio striker Waldir Lucas headed a corner goalwards, only for Grégory Wimbée to produce a fine save.
Metz finally put their supporters out of their agony, securing the win with a second goal in the closing stages, as Dino Djiba headed in Obraniak’s cross.
Carl Medjani received his marching orders moments later, but Metz held on to the three points without too much difficulty.
