Marseille’s recent run of form continued on Sunday when they came from behind to beat Monaco at the Stade Vélodrome.
Jean Fernandez’s side beat Nantes last weekend and followed that up with a slender UEFA Cup success over Heerenveen. They made it three wins in seven days thanks to an impressive second-half rally.
Meriem, who played for Marseille for one season, opened the scoring for Monaco in 19th minute. The goal game after a pacy burst from Patrice Evra on the left and, after Emmanuel Adebayor had cleverly let the ball run through, Meriem rifled a shot past Fabien Barthez.
Three minutes before the break, the home side almost drew level. François Modesto upended Mamadou Niang in the penalty area, but Taye Taiwo’s spot kick bounced back out off the post.
Marseille continued to pile pressure on the Monaco goal after the break and their persistence was rewarded with two goals in the space of eight minutes. Sabri Lamouchi cut the ball back from the right side and, after a fortunate rebound, it fell nicely for Wilson Oruma who struck a crisp shot past Guillaume Warmuz.
The home fans were on their feet again minutes later when Lamouchi struck the winner. Oruma linked up nicely with Niang and when the Senegal striker’s cross was fumbled by Warmuz, Lamouchi was on hand to strike home.
