Marseille slumped to their sixth defeat of the season on Saturday, as Le Mans ran out comfortable 3-0 winners at the Stade Léon-Bollée.
Having taken just one point from their last two matches, Marseille’s slump continued after a dismal display. Christian Gimenez was an invisible force in a Marseille attack bereft of the injured Mamadou Niang, highlighting the club’s need to invest in more firepower during the winter break.
Le Mans, meanwhile, posed a far bigger attacking threat and duly went ahead as early as the sixth minute when Davide Chiumento crashed a shot into the top corner, leaving Fabien Barthez with no chance.
Marseille boss Jean Fernandez introduced Andres Mendoza to partner Gimenez in the second half, but Le Mans continued to snuff out the visitors’ attacks and eventually ran away with a comfortable win.
James Fanchone scored the vital second goal on the hour mark after Barthez had failed to hold onto Ismael Bangoura’s strike. That seemed to extinguish Marseille's belief and Bangoura then added to the Mediterranean side's woes by scoring a third goal, slapping home a ferocious volley.
